School of Communication: Mass Media Major at Illinois State University
I am a graduate of Illinois State University with a Bachelor's Degree of Arts and Sciences in Mass Media: Television Production under the School of Communication. I have written, produced and edited numerous promotional videos as an intern with the University Marketing and Communication Agency, as well as produced news packages and public service announcement campaigns for ISU's "TV-10" live newscast. It is an extremely fun and exciting major that I am very comfortable with. I love the central idea of impacting an audience through creative story-telling.
Mass media production and creative marketing strategy are two things that I am very passionate about and am confident I want to pursue as a career. The curriculum at Illinois State University has supplied me with experience and knowledge in all three elements of production; pre-production, live production and post-production. Although I enjoy live and post production, I have a true passion for pre-production and the creative story-telling involved. Additionally, I have always had natural leadership, interpersonal skills and a natural urge to keep growing- which has caused my strong interest in pursuing not only a Copywriter position, but to keep growing and challenging myself as a Creative Director someday. I understand the importance of being able to delegate amongst a group in a positive, lighthearted, and efficient manner. When leading a team (whether it be at TV-10, PRSSA or SVW), my goal is to provide a welcoming environment where others can feel comfortable to express themselves and confident in being "on the same page" as the rest of the team. The underlying goal is to avoid team members from feeling alienated from their work. Enthusiasm, excitement and freedom of expression is vital in allowing a constant flow of ideas that will not only create great work, but inspire the team to keep challenging themselves.
As a media consumer, I am constantly brainstorming scripts, and production ideas, for existing marketing campaigns. I am fascinated by the combination of story-telling and visual communication. Interning at DraftFCB (now "FCB Global") and The University Marketing and Communications Agency has allowed me to really understand all aspects of the production process from start to finish. I was fortunate enough to observe creative "think-tank" meetings, work in audio engineering studios, set up live stages, assist editors, and of course fetch all of their lunch orders around noon.
Working with applications such as Final Cut Pro, Adobe Creative Suite Programs (Premiere, After Effects and Photoshop) as well as screenwriting apps such as Celtx, has allowed me to gain experience with the software seen in many professional agencies and production companies around the world. Interning with DraftFCB, University Marketing and Communications Agency, and as a student editor for "TV-10 News" I have had the experiences of working in a scheduled environment infested with stressful deadlines. I have benefited from this tremendously because I have learned how to work with software applications, various cameras, lighting equipment, audio equipment, human interaction and post production work in a timely and efficient manner.
Experiencing the entire process involved in strategizing, concepting and executing an ad campaign was the most exciting line of work I have ever been a part of. The environment at an advertising agency is an amazing combination of scientific strategy and artistic play. I love this atmosphere because it is very much a formal business, however there is a humanistic and lighthearted approach to projects which welcomes an abundance of creative ideas and expression. Throughout my time in the classroom and in the field, I have first-handedly learned the importance of formal responsibility, leadership, strategy, teamwork, camaraderie, and excellent communication in producing innovative and refreshing ideas that will not only deliver client success, but inspire others in the agency to reach their highest creative potential.
